The basics
What is a plantation shutter?
It is a made-to-measure panel fitted on the inside of a window or door, at full or part height, with horizontal slats called louvres that tilt. Angle the louvres to get the light and privacy that suit you, or swing the panels open like doors to clear the whole window.
Solid or louvred: what is the difference?
A solid panel shutter has no louvres, so there is nothing to tilt and it keeps out more of the light. That makes solid panels a common pick for bedrooms, and for period houses where you want that look. Have a look at our solid panel shutters.
Which other styles can I have, apart from full height?
Café style shutters cover just the bottom half of the window. Tier-on-tier gives you a top panel and a bottom panel that each open on their own. You can also have solid or raised panels, panels that run on a track across wide windows and doors, and shaped panels made to fit arched, angled and round windows. Browse all the styles we make.
Do shutters make a room dark?
Only if you want them to. Open the louvres and you get plenty of daylight. Shut them and it gets close to dark. No louvred shutter will make a room pitch black, though. For that you need blackout shutters: either solid panels, or Shutter & Shade, a shutter with a honeycomb blind set in behind it (available in Seattle and Montana).
Will shutters look right in a period home?
They will. Solid panels look right in Victorian and Georgian houses, and so do shapes we make for arches and narrow panes. For period homes and feature windows, we point people to our Montana hardwood range.
Measuring up and fitting
Is there a window or door shutters won't fit?
No. We make each shutter to measure, so we can fit ordinary windows, bay windows, arched and angled windows, round windows and skylights, plus doors, French and patio doors among them.
Could I measure and fit my own shutters?
Some firms sell shutters on a supply-only basis, and putting them up yourself saves you the fitting cost. The catch is that a shutter measured wrong won't forgive you, and bays, arches and angled windows are harder again. We come out for a free design visit and measure each window ourselves, then our own fitters put the shutters up. To see how the measuring works, read our how-to guide.
How soon can my shutters be fitted?
It depends on the range you pick and the windows you have, but most jobs take 10 to 12 weeks from order to fitting. If you need them sooner, ask about our express option, where your shutters come in by air freight. Your quote gives the lead time for your own order.
What do the fitters do on the day?
They check every measurement one last time, fix the frames in place and hang the panels. Then they adjust the hinges and louvres until each panel opens and shuts without catching. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes for a small window and 1 to 2 hours for a larger window or a bay. A whole house tends to take half a day to a day.
Cost, materials and colours
What do plantation shutters cost?
Each range has its own price per square metre: Seattle £288 to £360, Hollywood £368 to £460, Boston £400 to £500, Georgia £468 to £586, Montana £505 to £632. Your total comes down to how many windows you have, and their size and shape. Our price calculator gives you a rough figure, and after your free design visit we send a clear quote.
What materials do you use?
- Seattle: polymer-coated engineered wood. It is hard-wearing, and the range our customers choose most.
- Georgia: polymer louvres in engineered wood panels and frames, which lets a panel span a wider window.
- Boston: hardwood panels in frames made of engineered wood.
- Montana: premium hardwood around an engineered core that stops it warping.
- Hollywood: ABS, which stands up to water well, made for bathrooms and kitchens.
Which colours and stains are there?
Georgia, Boston and Hollywood offer 18 painted colours. Montana has those 18 plus 17 wood stains and 6 Designer Colour stains, which makes 41 finishes. Seattle keeps to 6 of our most popular colours. Want something else? You can order Georgia, Boston, Montana or Hollywood in a custom colour, and we can match a RAL K7 colour through our colour matching service. See all the colours.
Are shutters worth it over blinds or curtains?
Most of our customers treat them as a long-term investment. Shutters are made to last for decades, and they need a lot less looking after than fabric does. The one fitting gives you privacy, light control and better insulation, with a look that won't date.
Do shutters help keep the heat in?
They do. Around 18% of the heat a home loses goes out through its windows, and shutters can cut that loss by up to 36% (BBSA product tests at the University of Salford's Energy House Laboratory, 2023). The frames run edge to edge, so they stop draughts as well, and in a heatwave you can close the louvres to keep a room cool.
Cleaning and guarantees
How do I clean shutters?
It's easy. Give them a dust every so often, or go over them with a soft cloth that is just damp. Don't use abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals or furniture polish on them.
Do wooden shutters warp in British weather?
Wood moves with humidity, heat and moisture, most of all beside a radiator or in a bathroom. For that reason we offer ranges in engineered wood, we build Montana hardwood around an engineered core so it doesn't warp, and for wet rooms there is our Hollywood range in water-resistant ABS.
How long do shutters last?
Look after them and they will last for decades. Qualifying shutters come with our 10-year guarantee, which covers colour fastness for 10 years, workmanship for 10 years and hardware for 5 years.
Picking a company
What should I ask before I order shutters?
- Which material is right for each room, with its moisture, radiators and window size?
- Do you make shutters for bays and shaped windows, and will they take longer or cost more?
- Is fitting part of the price, and who does the fitting?
- How long is the lead time, and do you have an express option?
- What colours and finishes are there, and will they resist moisture in the rooms that need it?
- Which guarantee comes with them?
