Bedroom window with red solid panel shutters

Solid panel shutters made of hardwood

There are no louvres, only panels of solid timber. Close them and the room turns dark and private in the traditional way. Have them painted or stained, whichever suits your floors.

Solid panels for an older house

Close a solid panel and the room goes a lot darker, and with no slats there is nothing for anyone to look through. The style belongs in Victorian, Georgian and Regency houses, beside the cornicing, the fireplace and the original sash windows.

Total blackout is beyond them, but they stop most of the light, which is what you want in a bedroom, a nursery or a TV room. We build them in Montana premium hardwood, in paint or a wood stain, and put a mid rail across any tall panel.

  • Darker rooms

Closed panels hold back most of the daylight, a help in bedrooms and nurseries.

  • Nothing to see through

Without louvres, a closed panel gives you full privacy once the lights go on.

  • Period joinery

The panels follow traditional joinery, so they look at home beside sash windows, cornicing and fireplaces.

Questions we get on solid panel shutters

What is a solid panel shutter?

A shutter with panels of solid timber instead of the usual tilting louvres. It darkens the room, gives you privacy and helps hold the heat in, and it suits old and new houses alike.

Do they black out a room?

Close to it. Shut solid panels stop most of the light, which makes them a good match for bedrooms, nurseries and TV rooms. For total darkness, our blackout shutters add a blackout blind behind the shutter.

Solid or louvred: what is the difference?

Louvred plantation shutters let you angle the slats for light and air while the panels stay shut. Solid panels give that up in return for a darker, warmer and more private room.

Will they suit my period home?

Yes. It is the traditional British style of shutter. Plenty of Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian houses have them, and they look right beside cornicing, fireplaces and original sashes.

Which range do you make them in?

Montana, our premium hardwood range, makes solid and raised panels. Paint them, or pick a wood stain that matches your floor or furniture.

Will they work in a bay?

Yes, curved bays included. Each window in the bay is measured and gets solid panels made for it. The same goes for sashes and other awkward openings.

Can solid panels be café or tier-on-tier?

Yes. You can have them as tier-on-tier, café style or full height, and they work as room dividers too. Any tall panel has a mid rail.

Are they warmer than louvres?

Yes. Solid timber over the glass adds a layer against draughts and lost heat, and the room keeps more of its warmth on a cold night.
