Step-by-Step Measuring Guide for Interior Plantation Window Shutters

Accurate measuring is essential to ensure your plantation shutters fit perfectly and operate smoothly. Follow the steps below carefully before placing an order. If in doubt, always ask for professional advice before manufacturing.

Before You Start

You will need:

  • Steel tape measure (mm)

  • Notepad or measuring sheet

  • Pencil

  • Spirit level (recommended)

Important measuring rules:

  • Always measure in millimetres (mm)

  • Measure each window individually – never assume they are the same

  • Measure to the nearest millimetre

  • Do not make deductions unless specifically instructed

Step 1: Identify Your Mounting Type

Inside Recess (Most Common)

Shutters fit neatly inside the window recess for a clean, built-in look.

Outside Recess

Shutters are fitted on the wall or architrave around the window, ideal where recess depth is insufficient.

Step 2: Measuring for Inside Recess Shutters

1. Measure the Width

  • Measure the width of the recess at three points:

    • Top

    • Middle

    • Bottom

  • Record the smallest measurement

2. Measure the Height

  • Measure the height of the recess at three points:

    • Left

    • Centre

    • Right

  • Record the smallest measurement

3. Measure the Recess Depth

  • Measure from the window frame to the front edge of the recess

  • Ensure sufficient depth for the shutter panel and louvres

  • Note any obstructions (handles, vents, alarm sensors)

Step 3: Measuring for Outside Recess Shutters

1. Measure Overall Width

  • Measure the desired width covering the window and any overlap

  • Add at least 50–75mm overlap on each side for optimal light control

2. Measure Overall Height

  • Measure from the top to the bottom of where the shutter frame will sit

  • Add overlap above and below the window if possible

3. Check Fixing Surface

  • Ensure the wall or architrave is flat and suitable for fixing

  • Note any obstacles such as coving or radiators

Step 4: Measuring Bay Windows

For Square or Angled Bays

  • Measure each window section individually

  • Record widths and heights separately

  • Measure angles if required (using a digital angle finder or template)

For Curved Bays

  • Curved bay windows require professional templating

  • Do not attempt to measure without guidance

Angled / Sloped Windows

  • Measure the full height and width

  • Measure angles carefully

  • Provide a clear sketch with dimensions

Arched or Circular Windows

  • Measure the widest width and the tallest height

  • Measure radius or diameter where possible

  • These windows usually require specialist templates

Step 6: Measure for Tier-on-Tier or Café Style Shutters

  • Measure full window height as normal

  • Specify the split position (usually aligned with window glazing bars)

  • Confirm which section opens independently

Step 7: Final Checks Before Submitting Measurements
