Kitchen Shutters: Which Shutter World Range Handles Steam, Splashes and Grease

Shutter World makes four plantation shutter ranges built to cope with kitchen moisture: Seattle, Hollywood, Boston and Georgia. Our team measures and fits each one to your window. Hollywood is 100% waterproof for the wettest spots. Seattle, Boston and Georgia resist moisture and wipe clean, so cooking steam and splashes come off easily.

Which shutters work best in a kitchen?

Hollywood Shutters are the safest choice for a kitchen because the range is 100% waterproof. Seattle, Boston and Georgia also suit kitchens, since each resists moisture and wipes clean. The right pick depends on how close the window sits to your sink and hob, and on your budget.

Here is how the four ranges line up for kitchen use:

Range Material Price per m² Kitchen strengths
Seattle Engineered wood, polypropylene finish £288-£360 Moisture-resistant, wipe-clean, cord-free
Hollywood 100% waterproof material £368-£460 Resists steam, splashes, humidity, warping and fading
Boston Engineered wood core, tough MDF frame £400-£500 Built for kitchens without swelling or degrading
Georgia High-density MDF core, polypropylene coating Quoted on survey Resists damp and steam, wipe-clean, lightweight

Our full price breakdown by range shows how those per-square-metre figures turn into a finished window.

What makes a kitchen window harder on shutters than other rooms?

A kitchen window takes steam, splashes and airborne grease, often all in one afternoon of cooking. Wood that isn't built for it can swell, warp or lose its finish. That's why we match the range to the window, and why the surface and the louvre design matter as much as the material.

Three things decide how a shutter copes:

Hollywood: the range for windows above a sink

Our Hollywood Shutter Range is custom-made from 100% waterproof material. It resists steam, splashes, humidity, warping, cracking and fading. We recommend it for bathrooms, kitchens, wet rooms and conservatories, and a window directly over a sink is exactly where it earns its price.

Hollywood comes in contemporary colours, finishes, slat sizes and frame options. Louvres adjust for privacy and light, and the range also insulates. Pricing runs £368 to £460 per m².

Seattle, Boston and Georgia: moisture-resistant options for everyday kitchens

Seattle, Boston and Georgia each give a kitchen window a wipe-clean surface at a different price and build.

Seattle Shutters are our budget-friendly engineered-wood range at £288 to £360 per m². The polypropylene finish gives a painted-timber look in a choice of neutral tones. Seattle suits living areas, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, nurseries and kids' rooms, so one range can cover a whole house.

Boston Shutters cost £400 to £500 per m². They resist warping, chipping, cracking, dust, grime and moisture, and they're designed for kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Boston also insulates naturally, blocking heat in summer and holding warmth in winter. Colours include crisp white and a rich wood-tone effect.

Georgia Shutters use a high-density MDF core with a polypropylene coating. They resist damp and steam, stay lighter than solid wood, and suit kitchen windows where steam and humidity are the main moisture sources. Sample swatches are available for the colour and wood-look finishes. Georgia comes with a material and workmanship warranty.

Our range comparison sets all five ranges side by side, including Montana, our premium hardwood range for living rooms, bedrooms, offices and heritage homes.

Can you have café style shutters in a kitchen?

Yes. Café style shutters cover only the lower half of the window, with the top half left open. In a kitchen that keeps light and the view coming in at the top while the lower panels give privacy from the street. Georgia's styles include café style, alongside full-height, tier-on-tier and tracked panels.

Café style is one of the shutter styles we make to measure. Tier-on-tier is another, with upper and lower sections that open independently, so you can close the bottom tier and angle the top louvres.

How we measure and fit a kitchen window

Kitchen windows rarely sit in neutral territory. There are worktops, taps and tiles to work around. We reject the cut-to-fit approach: each shutter is made to the measurements of your specific window, so it fits without unsightly fillers.

Our process starts with a free home design consultation and on-site survey. Ken Luke, our founder and installer, and our design consultant Scott work with homeowners across the UK. Our team measures, manufactures and installs, so the person who surveys your window knows what has to fit around your sink. You can also use our AI Design Preview Visualiser to preview a design before you commit.

Care is simple. For Georgia, wipe with a damp cloth, use mild soap if needed, avoid harsh chemicals, and check hinges and fasteners now and then.

Frequently asked questions

Which range should I pick for a window directly above the sink?

Choose Hollywood. The range is 100% waterproof and resists steam, splashes, humidity, warping, cracking and fading, so it suits the spot that gets the most water. Prices run £368 to £460 per m². We confirm the choice on the on-site survey once we've seen the window.

Are kitchen shutters easy to clean?

Yes. Seattle and Georgia are both wipe-clean, and Boston resists dust, grime and moisture. For Georgia, wipe with a damp cloth and add mild soap if needed. Harsh chemicals are best avoided on all our finished ranges.

Do you offer shutters for kitchens with an awkward window shape?

Yes. We make angled, arched, bay, round, skylight and patio door shutters to measure, as well as standard shapes. Our unusual window options are built to your exact measurements, so a kitchen with a bay or a period window gets a precise fit.

What is the cheapest range suitable for a kitchen?

Seattle Shutters start at £288 per m² and suit kitchens, with moisture-resistant polypropylene finishing and a wipe-clean surface. The final cost depends on the size of your window, which we confirm at the survey.
