Shutters for Bifold Doors: Track-Mounted Bi-Fold Shutters Made to Measure
Shutters for bifold doors are track-mounted bi-fold panels that run along a top and bottom track and fold back to clear the opening. Shutter World makes them to measure in Montana hardwood or Georgia moisture-resistant MDF, surveys every opening on site, and fits them ourselves anywhere in the UK.
How do shutters for bifold doors work?
Tracked bi-fold shutters hang from a top track and guide along a bottom track. The panels slide along the opening and fold back on themselves. Each set is made to the exact size of your opening, with adjustable louvres, so you can fold the shutters away to use the doors or tilt the louvres for privacy and softer light.
The track is what makes this work on a wide glazed opening. A conventional hinged shutter swings into the room and gets in the way of folding doors. Tracked panels travel sideways along the wall instead, so the floor space stays clear. Our top-and-bottom track system carries the panels across large spans, which is why we use it for patio entrances, sliding doors, and wide openings generally.
Bifold doors put a lot of glass in one place. That's great for light and views, and awkward for privacy at night and glare at midday. Louvres let you tune both, panel by panel, without closing the room off completely.
Tracked shutter styles for door openings
Our patio shutter page lists four styles for sliding and French doors. Three of them also suit bifold door openings, depending on how the doors sit and how much of the opening you want covered.
| Style | How it works | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Bi-fold tracked | Panels fold concertina-style along a top and bottom track | Wide bifold and patio openings |
| Bypass tracked | Panels slide past one another on separate tracks | Wide openings where you want panels to overlap |
| Full-height patio | One tall run of panels from head to floor | Floor-to-ceiling glazing |
| French door cutout | Panels shaped around the door opening | French doors |
For a standard set of folding glass doors, bi-fold tracked is usually the natural match. The shutters fold the same way the doors do, so the two feel like part of the same design. We settle the final choice at the survey, once we've seen the doors in place.
Our full list of shutter styles also includes bi-fold track shutters alongside patio door, full-height, tier-on-tier, and café style options. Tracked panels can be combined with the others if the room has a mix of openings. A kitchen extension, for example, might have bifold doors on one wall and a skylight overhead.
Montana and Georgia: the two ranges for tracked panels
We offer tracked configurations in two ranges, and they suit different priorities.
Montana Shutters are premium hardwood, made from sustainably sourced, responsibly harvested high-grade timber. They cost £505 to £632 per m². You get natural wood grain, a smooth action, and a wide choice of finishes, from crisp white and natural oak to bold statement colours. Montana is available in full-height, tier-on-tier, café-style, and tracked layouts. It also insulates well, holding warmth in winter and blocking excess heat in summer. That helps on a big glazed wall.
Georgia Shutters have a high-density MDF core with a polypropylene coating. They're lightweight, wipe-clean, and less vulnerable to humidity and temperature swings than solid wood. Georgia comes in full-height, tier-on-tier, café, and tracked panels, in a selection of colours and wood-look finishes, with sample swatches available. A material and workmanship warranty applies. Georgia is moisture-resistant but not fully waterproof, so avoid prolonged direct water exposure.
Which should you pick? If the bifold doors open onto a living room or dining space and you want the look of real timber, Montana is the one. If the doors serve a kitchen diner where steam and splashes are part of daily life, Georgia is easier to live with. Either way, you can read what customers say on our reviews page.
Shutters are priced per square metre, and bifold openings are large. We quote the exact figure after the survey, once we know the true width and height.
What should I check before ordering shutters for bifold doors?
Check the direction your bifold doors stack, the position of the handles, the clearance at the head and floor for the tracks, and the exact opening size. We check all of these at our free home design consultation and on-site survey, so you don't need to measure anything yourself.
A few of those points deserve a closer look:
- Stack direction. Bifold doors fold to the left, to the right, or both ways from the centre. The shutters need a layout that works with that, so panels and door leaves don't compete for the same wall space.
- Handles and hardware. Door handles and locks sit proud of the frame. Panel positions and fold clearances are planned around them.
- Floor and head. A bottom track needs a clean, level run. We look at the threshold, flooring, and any uneven spots at the survey.
- Opening size. Wide spans are divided into panels that stay manageable to fold. We set the panel count and width for your opening.
From survey to fitting
The process runs in a straight line. We visit, survey, and talk through ranges and finishes. Our AI Design Preview Visualiser shows how the shutters will look on your own doors before anything is made. We then manufacture the set to your measurements and fit it ourselves.
We're based in West Yorkshire (WF5 8DL) and install across the UK. You can reach us on 08707 545 300 or through our contact page, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Our blog has more on fitting shutters to different window and door types.
Frequently asked questions
Can bi-fold shutters work as a room divider?
Yes. Our track-mounted bi-fold shutters can divide a room or cover a large patio door. The panels run along the tracks and fold away when you want the space open. Close them to separate an area, or tilt the louvres to let light through while keeping some privacy. We confirm the layout at the survey.
Do you make shutters for sliding and French doors too?
Yes. Our patio shutters cover sliding doors and French doors as well as bifold openings. The range includes bi-fold tracked, bypass tracked, full-height patio, and French door cutout styles. Each set is made to measure for the specific doors, so the shutters match how they open.
Are Georgia shutters suitable for a kitchen with bifold doors?
Georgia shutters resist damp and steam, and the surface wipes clean with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed. They are moisture-resistant but not fully waterproof, so keep them away from prolonged direct water. Avoid harsh chemicals, and check the hinges and fasteners occasionally.
Do you fit shutters outside West Yorkshire?
Yes. We're based in West Yorkshire and install across the UK. Our experts handle the measuring and the fitting, so the same people who survey your doors also install the shutters.
