Shutters for Unusually Shaped Windows: Custom-Made Options from Shutter World

Shutter World makes plantation shutters to measure for unusually shaped windows, including angled gable and loft windows, arched, round, curved bay, angled bay and square bay windows, and skylights. We survey the opening on site, build every panel to the exact frame, and fit the shutters with our own installers, so odd shapes get a precise fit without fillers.

Which unusual window shapes can Shutter World fit?

Shutter World makes plantation shutters for angled gable and loft windows, arched windows, round windows, curved bays, angled bays, square bays, conservatories, patio doors and skylights. Every shutter is custom-built to the individual frame, so the shape of the opening sets the design and the shutter fits it closely.

Here's the full picture by shape:

Window shape Our shutter style Where it typically sits
Triangular, gable, loft Angled shutters Loft conversions, gable ends, cathedral-style windows
Arched Arched shutters Period properties and non-standard frames
Round Round shutters Feature windows
Curved bay Curved bay shutters Made to each individual bay panel
Angled or irregular bay Angled bay shutters Period-property bays with uneven measurements
Square bay Square bay window shutters Victorian-style living rooms and front bedrooms
Conservatory, patio door, skylight Conservatory, patio door and skylight shutters Glazed extensions, sliding doors, roof windows

How do you measure shutters for an irregular window?

Every irregular window gets a free home design consultation and on-site survey from Shutter World. Our team takes detailed measurements of the actual frame, then each panel is made to those dimensions, from the hardwood frame to the individual slats. Our own installers fit the shutters, so there are no fillers or compromises.

That survey matters more here than on a standard rectangle. A gable window rarely has two matching angles, and an old arched frame can sit slightly off true. We reject the "cut-to-fit" approach, where a standard panel gets trimmed on the day. A shaped opening is measured, designed and built as one piece of joinery.

We also offer an AI Design Preview Visualiser, so you can see how a style and finish will look before anything is made.

Angled and gable windows

Angled shutters are our answer for loft conversions, gable-end windows, cathedral-style glazing and triangular openings. These are the windows where curtains and blinds struggle, because there's nowhere sensible to hang them and the shape fights any standard fitting.

A made-to-measure angled shutter follows the slope of the frame. You still get adjustable louvres, so you can control light and privacy, plus the insulation and noise reduction that come with a solid shutter on the glass. Top-floor rooms often get the harshest summer sun, so the light control earns its place.

Arched and round windows

Arched windows suit period properties and are often the feature of the room. Our arched shutters are engineered to the exact window measurements, so the curve of the frame is followed all the way round.

Round windows get the same treatment. Our round shutters are crafted with precision, with the louvres set within a circular frame. A round window is usually a focal point, so the finish matters. We offer a wide choice of colours and stains, and you can pick the one that suits the wall around it.

Bay windows: curved, angled and square

Bays come in three shapes at Shutter World, and each is built differently.

Bay panels in an older house are rarely identical, which is why we measure each one separately.

Which shutter range suits which window shape?

Montana hardwood suits feature windows and heritage homes, Boston engineered wood suits kitchens, bathrooms and small openings, and Hollywood waterproof shutters suit steamy rooms and conservatories. Choose by the room's conditions and the finish you want, then we confirm what suits the shape at the survey.

Range Material Price per m² Good for
Hollywood 100% waterproof £368 to £460 Bathrooms, kitchens, wet rooms, conservatories
Boston Engineered wood cores with MDF frame £400 to £500 Bay windows, small bathroom openings, kitchens, laundry rooms
Montana Sustainably sourced premium hardwood £505 to £632 Living rooms, bedrooms, heritage homes, feature windows, patio entrances

We also make Seattle engineered-wood shutters and Georgia moisture-resistant shutters, both measured and professionally fitted by us. Across our ranges, prices run from £288 to £632 per m². Our full price breakdown by range covers the detail, and our range comparison helps you narrow the choice.

Montana also comes in full-height, tier-on-tier, café-style and tracked configurations. That's useful when an odd window sits next to a patio door or a tall run of glass.

Heat loss and shaped windows

Unusual windows are often the draughtiest in the house. Loft windows, big arches and old bays all leak warmth. Historic Environment Scotland's guidance on traditional sash windows reports that timber shutters reduce heat loss by 51%, compared with 14% for heavy, lined curtains.

That figure is for timber shutters on sash windows, so treat it as a guide for similar glazing. Our shaped shutters are built with insulation in mind, and a close fit around the frame is where the benefit comes from. Summer works the same way in reverse, with the louvres blocking excessive heat.

Listed buildings and period properties

Many arched, angled and curved windows sit in older homes, so consent can matter. Historic England's Advice Note 16 states that reinstating missing shutters or installing entirely new shutters in a listed building is likely to require listed building consent.

If your home is listed, check with your local planning authority before ordering. For unlisted period homes, we regularly work on heritage and Victorian-style openings, and our survey picks up the quirks of old frames.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make shutters for skylights and conservatories?

Yes. Skylight shutters and conservatory shutters are both part of our range. Conservatories often suit our waterproof Hollywood shutters, which resist steam, humidity, warping and fading. Roof windows and glazed extensions are measured at the on-site survey like any other shaped opening, and each shutter is made to the exact frame.

Can I see how shaped shutters will look before I order?

Yes. Our AI Design Preview Visualiser lets you preview styles and finishes. You can pair it with our free home design consultation, where our design consultant talks you through the options for your specific window and room.
