Tier-on-Tier or Café Style Shutters: Which Is Right for Your Window?
Tier-on-tier and café style shutters are both made to measure by Shutter World in our Montana and Georgia ranges. Tier-on-tier shutters have independent top and bottom panels, so you can open the top for light while the bottom stays closed. Café style shutters cover only the lower half of the window, giving eye-level privacy with daylight above.
How do tier-on-tier and café style shutters differ?
Tier-on-tier shutters split the window into an upper and lower set of panels that open independently, and both sets can close to cover the whole window. Café style shutters cover the lower half only and leave the upper half open to daylight. Both are made to measure by Shutter World in Montana and Georgia.
The practical difference is how much of the window you can cover.
| Tier-on-tier | Café style | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Whole window, in two sections | Lower half of the window |
| Operation | Top and bottom panels open independently | Lower panels open and close |
| Privacy | Top panels open while bottom panels stay closed | Eye-level privacy with daylight above |
| Darkening | Both sections closed for full coverage | Upper half stays open |

A tier-on-tier set gives you three settings: everything shut, everything open, or the top open and the bottom shut. A café style set gives you one fixed arrangement, and that suits plenty of windows perfectly well.
Which windows suit each style?
Café style shutters suit street-facing and ground-floor windows, kitchens and dining areas. People can see in at eye level, but nobody needs to cover the glass above. Tier-on-tier shutters suit windows where you want the option of covering everything at night and opening the top by day.
Picture a terraced house with a ground-floor front window that sits close to the pavement. Café style panels cover the part passers-by can see into, and the upper glass still lets daylight reach the ceiling. If the same window is in a front room you also use as a TV room, tier-on-tier gives you full coverage in the evening without losing the daytime setting.
A few questions settle most choices:
- Do you need to cover the whole window at any point? If yes, choose tier-on-tier.
- Is the window only overlooked at eye level? Café style is enough.
- Do you want the top of the window kept clear for light all day? Café style does that by design.
- Is the room a kitchen or dining area at street level? Café style is a natural fit there.
Fully darkening a bedroom is a different job. For that, our blackout shutters for bedrooms are the better starting point.
Which range should I choose, Montana or Georgia?
Choose Montana if you want solid hardwood with real grain, priced at £505 to £632 per m². Choose Georgia if you want a lighter high-density MDF core with a polypropylene coating, priced from a survey quote. Both ranges offer tier-on-tier and café style configurations, so the decision comes down to material, budget and room.
Montana is sustainably sourced, responsibly harvested premium solid hardwood with natural wood grain. Finishes run from crisp white and natural oak to wood stains and bold statement colours. Customer reviews on our ratings page mention the Montana grain often.
Georgia is moisture-resistant, but it isn't fully waterproof, so avoid prolonged direct water exposure. It is lighter than solid wood and comes in colours and wood-look finishes, with free sample swatches available. Georgia carries a material and workmanship warranty and is quoted per square metre after a survey. Care is simple: wipe with a damp cloth, use mild soap and skip harsh chemicals.
Final pricing for either range depends on the window area we measure on site. Our per-square-metre price breakdown covers all five ranges, and our range comparison sets Montana and Georgia beside Seattle, Hollywood and Boston.
How do we measure and fit them?
One of our team measures each window on site, we make the frame and panels to those exact sizes, and our own fitters install them. Nothing goes to sub-contractors. The layout, tier-on-tier or café style, is talked through during the free design visit, so you choose with the real window in front of you.
We reject the 'cut-to-fit' approach.
Every component, from the frame to the individual slats, is made for your specific window. That matters for both of these styles. A tier-on-tier set has a meeting point between the top and bottom panels, and a café style set has a clean top edge. Both look right when the measurements are exact. We've surveyed, made and fitted plantation shutters from Ossett, West Yorkshire for more than 25 years, and our work carries a 10-year workmanship guarantee. You can read more about the people behind it on our about page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay for a design visit?
No. Our design visit is free and carries no obligation. One of our team comes to your home, looks at the window, talks through the options and measures. You can book it through our contact page, and the answer to this question also sits with other common ones on our questions and answers page.
Can I see finish samples before I order?
Free sample swatches are available for the Georgia range, so you can compare colours and wood-look finishes against your walls and furniture. For Montana, finishes include crisp white, natural oak, wood stains and bold statement colours, and we can talk through them during the design visit.
How is a Georgia quote worked out?
Georgia shutters are priced per square metre after a survey. We measure the window on site, confirm the configuration you want, and quote from those measurements. The quote is no-obligation. Montana has a published range of £505 to £632 per m², with the final figure set by the area measured.
Do you fit shutters outside West Yorkshire?
Yes. We're based in Ossett, West Yorkshire, and we serve homes across the United Kingdom. Our own fitters carry out installation, so the people who survey your window and make the shutters are the same team that fits them.
If you're weighing café style against tier-on-tier for a particular window, tell us the room, which way it faces and whether you want Montana or Georgia in the form below, and we'll come back with a straight recommendation for that window.
